Our History
On September 27th, 1880, the Swedish citizens of South Bend, Indiana, organized the Swedish Lutheran Evangelical Church, later to be named Gloria Dei. In the over-135 years since this humble founding, our parish has faithfully worshipped the Triune God in the beauty of holiness, given witness to the saving power of Jesus Christ and his Gospel, and reached out to the people of our community through service to those in need. In the twenty-first century, Gloria Dei continues its longstanding tradition of weekly Holy Communion, excellent music, and cheerful ministry to the community. Join us in our work of Christian service to the world!
Community Space
Our spacious community area comfortably seats 75–100 people at tables and features a stage, making it perfect for a variety of events. We use this space to serve meals to the community, host breakfasts after services, and hold meetings. The space is available for rent or for community groups to use for meetings, play practices, sports banquets, wedding showers, rehearsals, and receptions. A commercial kitchen is attached, and shuffleboard adds a fun touch—especially for our youth group during lock-ins.
